Clyde was an important mining centre during the 19th century. By the time this Bank of New Zealand outlet was constructed the local industry had shifted to fruit growing.
Today fruit growing is losing ground to vineyards and all banks have left Clyde as Alexandra become the regional centre just nine kilometres down the road.
