During the 1840s and 1850s Galveston was a major point of entry for German immigrants. With the increasing German population in the diocese Bishop M. Odin recommended construction of this church for the German Catholic population. The wood-frame Gothic Revival style church was built in 1859-60 by Joseph Bleicke, a German-born carpenter. The church features a square bell tower with a trefoil window. The church was closed by the diocese in 1968. The church building was set to become a warehouse however the Galveston Historical Foundation was able to negotiate with the diocese to restore and maintain the building. It now open to the public periodically and used for special events, including an occasional church service.
