Long Description:
The art deco Mayflower Hotel was designed by the distinguished Chicago firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst & White. From its opening on May 18, 1931 until the mid-1960s, the Mayflower was rated as Akron’s best hotel. As such, it hosted most of the city’s major social events. Its ballroom, decorated with a combination of Moderne and Louis XV motifs, was one of the most elegant rooms ever created in Akron. The 16-story stately landmark at the corner of South Main and State Streets had 450 rooms. The Main St entrance is marked by a marquee and large bronze mullioned window. The State St façade has a similar entry and both are flanked by display windows. A three-story limestone base is decorated with cartouches and masks above the portals. The side façade divides into two brick towers flanking a recessed façade. Here, and on the front, are alternating rows of aligned windows and bands of windows with dark panels. The hotel was operated by the Sheraton chain for awhile; it now houses apartments, the Mayflower Manor, for low income and elderly persons.
