"The Aeroplane Inn in Honey Creek may not look like much as you
drive by, but 70 years ago it was the site of an important moment in
American music history, the professional debut of Preston Love. Just
15 on that night in 1936, Love was pressed into service as a
last-minute replacement for an ill drummer in the band his brother
was part of, Webb and the Spiders. He went on to fame as a
saxophonist, playing with the Count Basie Orchestra in the 1940s. He
was the head of his own orchestra in the '50s, then worked as a
backup musician in the 1960s for the likes of Ray Charles, the
Temptations, and Marvin Gaye."
