[FR] La propriétaire du terrain, Madame veuve Fournier, amateur d'insolite, demande à Hector Guimard encore jeune et pratiquement inconnu d’y construire un immeuble de rapport (qui comportera trente-six appartements).
Il obtient avec cet immeuble le 1e prix de la plus belle façade de la ville de Paris en 1898, concours organisé par le journal Le Figaro.
Protection Monuments Historiques en 1983: façade sur la rue, toiture et éléments d'intérieur des parties communes
Hector Guimard applique ici des principes préconisés par l'architecte et théoricien Eugène Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879) : rejet de la planéité et de la symétrie.
La presse et le grand public habitués à la règle de la symétrie ne réagirent pas tous positivement à ce genre d’architecture traitée à la façon d’un sculpteur.
Guimard lors de l'attribution du prix du Figaro organisa la même année une exposition consacrée au castel Béranger, il y organisa des visites commentées.
L’immeuble est bâti en pierre les deux premiers étages et la partie latérale gauche du castel; pour le reste, Guimard utilisera des motifs de briques rosées pâles et de la pierre meulière dans les façades sur la villa Béranger.
L'entrée principale est entourée de pierre meulière sculptée, équilibrée par deux colonnes.
Le vestibule est tapissé de chaque côté par des panneaux de grès vernissé dont les tonalités vertes apparaissent de temps à autre cuivrées: briques sorties du four ou émaillées.
Des hippocampes en fer grimpent le long de l'immeuble et les colonnes qui ouvrent sur l’entrée de service rappellent discrètement des phallus stylisés
Dans la cour donnant sur la villa Béranger, une fontaine aux formes originales.
Hector Guimard y a réalisé toute la décoration intérieure, certains meubles, tapis, bow-windows (autorisés depuis 1893), échauguettes, balcons, Le peintre Paul Signac y demeura.
[EN] The stem and branch-like character of both the interior furnishing and the exterior ironwork stand in a curious and brittle contrast to the articulate, architectonic but disjunctive elements that make up the cumbersome mass of the building's exterior. With 36 apartments, each different from the next, the Castel Béranger is a curious compound of rational planning and non-rational intent and expression. Guimard was to exploit its competition as an occasion for promoting le style Guimard. To this end he staged an exhibition of the building and its contents in the Salon du Figaro in 1899, while simultaneously publishing a book of the work under the title, L'Art dans l'habitation moderne. Le Castel Béranger. More acerbic than his flamboyant country houses of the turn of the century and located in the fashionable, fast-growing suburb of Auteuil, the Castel Béranger gave Guimard a prime opportunity with which to demonstrate the synthetic subtleties of his style, in which urban and rustic references could be judiciously mixed together."
