The Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse was built in 1875 and was lit for the first time on April 27, 1876. It is called that because this point is exactly 30 miles from the mouth of the Niagara River. The lighthouse was built to protect ships on Lake Ontario from a shallow sandbar. Several historic shipwrecks occurred nearby before the light was built. It was operated by the United States Lighthouse Service until July 1, 1939 when the United States Coast Guard took over.
The Friends of the Lighthouse began a restoration in 1995 to refurbish the two-story house that once housed the families of the lighthouse keeper and his assistant. The first floor is open for tours while the second floor is the portion that is available for rent. Rates for the cottage vary by season, but generally are from $200/night or $800-$1250/week. Amenities: Those who rent the lighthouse are provided with a private picnic area with a barbecue grill and picnic table. It also features a private entrance; kitchen with refrigerator, electric stove, microwave, coffee maker, cooking utensils, silverware and dishes; living room with electric fireplace, couch, two chairs and a writing desk; full bath with an old fashioned bathtub; and three bedrooms with queen size beds and pillows. You will need to provide your own linens and towels. Pets are not allowed.
