Text of the memorial:

In memory of
MAJOR WILLIAM HENRY SEWARD
United States Marine Corps
Killed in Action -- 6 March 1968 -- South Vietnam

On 6 March 1968, Major William H. Seward, US MC was the flight leader of two Marine CH 46--A helicopters from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 165 inserting a six-man special operations team into a remote location of the A Shau Valley region near the Laotian border. While hovering above the triple canopy jungle, lowering the team on a hoist through the trees, the helicopter piloted by MAJ Seward came under intense enemy small-arms fire and was shot down. In 1994, a joint US/Socialist Republic of Vietnam recovery team located the remains of MAJ Seward. In July 2000, MAJ Seward was finally laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, with full Military Honors.

Bill Seward was born in Atlanta 11 April 1937. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1955 and attended the Georgia Institute of Technology majoring in aeronautical engineering 1955 -- 1957.

MAJ Seward joined the U.S. Navy as a Marine Aviation Cadet and was accepted to Naval Flight School. He was commissioned into the US Marine Corps in May 1959. During his 11 years of service, he served two combat tours in Vietnam. He was awarded a Purple Heart, 16 Air Medals, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the RVN. Gallantry Cross with Palm, the RVN Civil Action Medal 1st-Class, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation and three Navy Unit Citations.
