The Union Pacific Railroad started constructed the Joso Viaduct across the Snake River in 1911 and completed it in 1912. The Joso Bridge a steel bridge about 3920 feet long. The bridge is built on a 0.6% grade and has 27 supports with 55 spans. When built it stood 261 feet above the bottom of the Snake River. But when the Lower Monument Dam was completed in 1968, the lower 67 feet of the bridge peirs were submerged leaving only 194 feet between the top of the bridge and the river surface. The five longest spans are across the river and are Warren deck trusses, the remaining spans are plate girders.
