Situated in a car park in Wellington Street, Picton sits Life
Boat No 10. On 16 February 1986 The prestige Russian cruise liner Mikhail Lermontov left Picton with 743 passengers aboard. Near Port Gore in the Marlborough Sounds she struck a reef and sank in 33 metres of water. Passing ships picked up the survivors and unfortunatly one crew member lost his life. This life boat was the 5th from the forward on port side. At sea, by convention, odd numbers are on the starboard side and even on the port. (visit link)
