This C&O Canal Lockkeeper's House seems out of place today along busy Constitution Avenue, but when it was built the C&O Canal Extension connected the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers through a canal that ran here where the National Mall is now.

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Extension was built in 1832-33 to connect the C&O Canal to the Washington City Canal between the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. Lockkeeper's houses, like this one remaining, were built along the length of the Washington Canal which ran where Constitution Avenue is now. The canal proved to be unprofitable and was abandoned by about 1855.
The Lockkeeper's House fell into disrepair until the 1930's when it was restored for park use. The House is located on park property on the National Mall but is not currently open for public entry.
