This spectacular 3 story light house, built by Mr D. Scott in 1884, from kauri timber is New Zealands oldest lighthouse. It is now restored by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Built at 278 feet above sea level, at a cost of 5571 pounds, along with tool sheds & two houses to accommodate the lighthouse keepers. The lighthouse first operated 1 December 1884 and was switched to automation on 17 November 1947. On this day the Kaipara Harbour was also closed to ships. The Kaipara Harbour was once the busiest in New Zealand with sailing ships carrying kauri timber & gum. The treacherous sand bar at the the harbour enterance claimed many ships, some wrecks can still be seen, from time to time, with the shifting sands.
This 600 hectare area is one of the largest unmodified sand dune systems in New Zealand.
Beware of quick sand, tides & winds when venturing to this location either by foot or 4 wheel drive vehicle.http://www.kauricoast.co.nz/Feature.cfm?WPID=6342
