Wentworth is a small community in eastern Lake County, South Dakota.

It has a population of 186 as of July 2008, reflecting a decrease in population of about 1% from the 2000 census.

The town was settled by German, Norwegian, Irish, Dutch, and Swedish immigrants and was incorporated on October 5, 1896.

The town was named for George Wentworth, by his son Rinaldo, a local settler.

The town was delivered a staggering blow when SD Highway 34 was re-routed south of the town. This proved to be the death knell for many of the local businesses as traffic no longer went through Wentworth.

A redeeming event helped the town stabilize when the Dakota Ethanol plant located just south of the town. This plant produces about 48 million gallons of ethanol annually. The plant consumes about 17 million bushels of corn from the region and helps the employment of the local residents.
