Aleksis Kivi was the first author who wrote significiant novel in Finnish language. His masterpiece Seven Brothers is still considered the cornerstone of Finnish literature earning Kivi the title National Author.
Kivi's characters are deep and realistic. His novels and plays focus on rural life in the Finnish countryside. However, this didn't appeal to literature critics during his lifetime. Mentally and physically wrecked Kivi died in 1872 at the age of 38. According to legend his last words were: "I live! Live!"
If that was a reference to his forthcoming greatness and fame in Finland, he couldn't have been more right.
No known photographs of Kivi exist. Sculptor Wäinö Aaltonen used a sketch drawn shortly after Kivi's death for statue's face.
