This amazing sculpture of a Stearman Kaydet bi-plane is located in the Norman Centennial Plaza Four. The plane replica is the focus of the plaza that informs visitors of the history of the City of Norman during the war years.
The Stearman bi-plane trained thousands of pilots during World War II and the Korean conflict at Norman's naval training facility.
This sculpture is approximately 6 feet wide (with the plane's wingspan), 6 feet long, and 3 feet tall. There is a mechanic working on the front of the plane, and the pilot is behind the wings, pausing to read a book before he boards.
I have never seen a sculpture with more detail than this one. From the numerous tools on the mechanic's belt to the backpack and book with the pilot, the artist left nothing out! The artist did a phenomenal job with every aspect of this Stearman replica.
Partial text on plaque, regarding this sculpture:
"The likeness of the sculptured mechanic and pilot are in memory of the sculptor's son and father-in-law."
