From Florida - A Guide to the Southernmost State - Part III. The Florida Loop, Tour 7:

GREENVILLE, 69 m. (106 alt., 904 pop.), is built around several lumber mills. Founded about 1850, the town was known as Sandy Ford, and later as Station Five, because it was the fifth railroad station east of Tallahassee. During the War between the States a women's society was organized here to sew for the soldiers, and the first box of supplies sent to the Confederate commissary in Richmond was marked, 'From Station Five.' The quartermaster receiving the articles wrote the society that in the future all donations would have to be sent from some designated station. As the majority of the early settlers had migrated from the vicinity of Greenville, South Carolina, that name was selected.

As of the 2004 U.S. Census, the population of Greenville was 832. The town is quite small with a total area of 1.3 square miles. The Town’s city hall and jail were completed as a WPA project in 1936. Greenville's claim to fame is that it was the childhood home of Rhythm and Blues musician Ray Charles. There's not much to do here, but you can visit a lovely statue of Ray Charles in Haffye Hays Park and you can visit Charles' childhood home as well.
