A fire destroyed the 1873 courthouse on December 30, 1890. Arson was suspected but never proved. Many other towns vied for the countyseat, without success.
The cornerstone was laid on July 23, 1891. A parade with about 3,000 spectators were on hand to celebrate the start of the new courthoue.
The building is quite attractive. The building is constructed of red sandstone quaried from Warrensburg, Missouri. The first course of stone is of Indiana limestone. The foundation is made of native stone from the area.
