Vasco da Gama discovered Natal on Christmas day, hence the naming (Natal is Christmas in Portuguese).
On the 500th anniversary, in 1997, the province of Natal gave this statue to the city of Évora, since he lived here for quiet a while.
The text on the pedestal is written in Portuguese, English and Afrikaans, commemorating the date:
"THIS MONUMENT WAS PRESENTED TO PORTUGAL BY THE PEOPLE OF NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA, TO COMMEMORATE THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF VASCO DA GAMA WHO DISCOVERED NATAL ON CHRISTMAS DAY 1497"
