Biography of Alexander the Great/Alexander III The Great/Alexander of Macedon:
This famous leader was born in 356 B.C. in Macedonia, son of Philip 2, King of Macedonia, and Olympias, princess of Epirus. At the age of 13, his father hired Greek Philosopher Aristotle as Alexander's tutor, and the young man soaked up all the information he could and developed many interests.
In 338 B.C. Alexander was given a commanding post in the Macedonian army. His leadership ability and bravery were well known in the land, and his skills served his country well.
Not long after the Macedonian's defeat of Greece, Philip took a wife (Cleopatra) and it tore the family apart. Alexander fled with his mother to Epirus.
During this time, King Philip was assasinated, and there were rumors that Olympias and Alexander were partly responsible for the act. After his father's assassination, Alexander ascended the throne and led his people to even greater power. He did not hesitate in ordering the execution of all of his enemies. He assembled a very large army and declared that Asia would be won by Macedonia.
King Alexander went on to lead many battles and conquests. He died in 323 B.C. in Macedonia at the early age of 33 after drinking at a friend's party. When Alexander died he had not designated an heir to his throne.
