I had never seen a 'sit-by-me' piece out of marble! This large piece is in Loveland's Benson Sculpture Garden. 'The Conversation' lends itself to the idea of people 'joining the conversation.' BTW - the reason candy makers use marble is because it remains cold so it will cool the warm candy concoction. 'Twas a bit cold sitting there in that 'conversation!'
Comment from the artist: “The Loveland High Plains Arts Council asked that I create a sculpture similar to ‘Family Reflections,’ a large installation of my ‘Bench People’ that is the centerpiece of Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.
“When I can, I try to emphasize something that is important to me in my work - be it public or private, and while Benson Park is located in a community of families, I agreed to emphasize ‘family.’
“Another thing happened while I created the maquette for that sculpture ... I visualized that if one person were to sit on the lap of the woman and another person were to sit on the lap of the man, that those two people would ‘become’ the sculpture - engaging in conversation in virtually the same position as the sculpture itself. (Try it!)“ (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/30/us/30loveland.html?_r=1&oref=slogin)
