Sitting by Johnson Creek
An unexpected sight
Vanes splayed to catch the breeze
Windmill lover's delight!
Tidy as a dollhouse
Its 'innards' all are bare
Sure would like some hist'ry
On how it came to be there!
This little stone windmill (only about 20 feet tall) sits on the edge of the creek in Austin's Johnson Creek Greenbelt. It's clearly been restored -- the vanes are in great shape, though they were locked so they couldn't spin -- and few of the mechanics inside remain (just a bit of rusted pipe, etc.).
All I could find on it was the inscription above the door itself:
On this site with the
WINDMILL
was the home of
EFFIE CARA and
WYLIE WILSON
BENNETT
There is scant history online at present (1/25/10) about the Greenbelt itself -- only that the City acquired it in 1977.
So any additional "meat" should be included in your log!
Currently this site also has two geocaches: the virtual GC4DF2 Spinning in the wind and the physical GC1BQVY Urban Windmill -- though, as we cachers know, this is never a permanent state of affairs.
