Tommy is mounted on a large granite stone in the quad between the Givens Performing Arts Auditorium and the PE complex. As the story goes a UNC-P Brave before an important game came by the sculpture and rubbed the hawk for good luck. A tradition was born and a mascot for the school. Oh yeah, they won that pivotal game to advance to higher level of play. Plaque mounted on rock under the sculpture of Tommy reads: "TOMMY" The Red-tailed Hawk is a gift from the Class of 1999. This tribute honors the spirit of the UNCP Braves. See the hawk within yourself, dedicated February 10,1999, Artist Paul Van Zandt.
