John Mitchell 1942 – 2005
A Skilled and Determined Plantsman
The Haast Visitor Centre Wetland is dedicated to the work of John Mitchell, a man with a passion for native plants and a great belief in the benefits of conservation.
The task of converting a “wet paddock” on this site into a functioning natural wetland required good landscape design and people capable of turning the drawings into a reality.
When John began work on the wetland in 1991 the scale of the job caused some people to wonder if it could succeed. Characteristically John was more interested in what it would look like when finished.
Over the course of 18 months John salvaged thousands of plants from disturbed sites around the Haast district and replanted them at the Visitor Centre. It was a job that required a person with a very green thumb and a lot of determination.
John’s significant efforts, on this project and in conservation work elsewhere, are recognised here.
