Recognising the damaged that the introduced deer, chamois, and thar had done to the high country, there was a national programme to remove these animals. Today most of them are farmed as venison.

Deer, Chamois and Thar, introduced as game animals in the late 1800s, so successfully acclimatised that their vast numbers severely damaged both the forest and upper montane vegetation zones
Govt cullers once roamed these mountains, but it took the game meat industry, mainly using helicopters to reduce the huge populations to a controllable level
