This commemorates the Pope's visit to Hamtramck in September 22, 1969. Dedicated by Archbishop Edmund Szoka of Detroit.
I was one of those fortunate enough to be at this visit.
Smithsonian description.
A portrait of Pope John Paul II. He stands atop a tower, with throne chair behind him. He is dressed in clerical robes, and his arms are outstretched before him, palms down in gesture of blessing. At the base of the tower is a low wall and rectangular block, with a relief profile head of the Pope, two plaques and incised text.
