This Old Church is St. James's Roman Catholic Church. It was constructed by North Carolina's oldest Catholic Parish which was founded in 1824. The church historic sign in front of the building reads:

"The oldest Catholic Church in North Carolina, St. Paul's was constructed by Hardy Lane to the plan of Wm. H. Burgwin. Bishop John England laid the cornerstone in 1840. The steeple was added in 1896 by Herbert Simpson."
