"This was The Beatles' first Hamburg show, performing at the Indra Club on the Grosse Freiheit street.
The group performed at the venue for 48 nights, ending on 3 October. The venue was owned by Bruno Koschmider, a local club owner who also owned the Kaiserkeller.
On this first night The Beatles played to just a handful of spectators, mainly prostitutes and their clients. The band were also forced by Koschmider to turn down their amplifiers, following a complaint from the woman who lived above the venue.
Feeling cowed by their unfamiliar surroundings, on this opening night The Beatles played the entire four and a half hour show huddled together and stock still. Worried at the impression they were making, their manager Allan Williams encouraged them to "Make it a show, boys!"
The phrase was taken up by Koschmider, whose cry of "Mak show, Beatles! Mak show!" would become a hallmark of this first Hamburg show. The Beatles took note, and began working on their stage show. By the end of their time in Germany they would be a tight live act, regularly drawing crowds and able to effortlessly thrill their audiences.
The Beatles' tenure at the Indra ended on 3 October, when the complaints from the upstairs resident made it impossible to continue."
