As of 2009, Hillsborough has a new town park. The address is 415 Dimmocks Mill Road. The park was made possible through the donation of land from the Gold family and a $500,000 grant from the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund.

The 2-acre facility includes a multi-purpose field, playground equipment, picnic structures, and a large fenced dog park. In addition, Gold Park has several walking trails. The longest trail follows the river and is 0.66 mile long. There are shorter spurs from .21 to .33 mile.

In the future, a half-mile of the longest trail will become part of Riverwalk, a $1.7 million greenway project linking downtown with Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area. Already in place is an impressive 200-foot span across wetlands. The railings are wooden and the floor is made from recycled composite material. There is a unique handrail on each side. At the far end is a 40-foot metal bridge.

The large picnic shelter and baseball field are available for reservations on a first-come, fee basis. For details and a reservation form, visit the website link. (The remainder of the park is free.) Water fountains and restrooms are available.

Hours: 8 AM to 30 minutes past sunset.

Directions: From downtown Hillsborough, go 0.5 mile west on King Street. Turn left onto S. Nash Street (at a traffic light). Go 0.25 mile south to a sharp bend to the right, followed by a sharp bend to the left. The park is on the left, immediately after going under the railroad trestle.
