"JAMES McCONNELL 1887-1917 World War I soldier; aviator. Flew for France in Lafayette Escadrille. Killed in action, March 19, 1917." This is quote from NC historical marker located just west of the memorial on NC 22/24/27.(see WM7Z6C) The cannons have an inscription related to how they came to be part of this memorial, which reads, "Donated to the State of North Carolina by act of Congress approved October 6, 1917, to be placed at foot of James Rogers McConnell monument at Carthage, NC." While there is no nomenclature plate I could locate, they appear to be 12 pounders based on various photographs of similar cannons I could locate and dimensions of other cannons I located. There is a date of 1862 on the side of the cannnon. Both cannons at the site are identical,
