Rollieres is the first hamlet you come to in Val Chisone after crossing the Col de Montgenèvre and descending on the Italian side to the lower road in the valley. In 1871 the chapel was decorated with a painted flora frieze and two sundials. These similar sundials show most of the Zarbula folk art features. In 2005 when I visited the site the dials were old, faded and the parging was failing. On the right the circular pattern of an earlier painting was showing through and peeling off.

Val Chisone was the venue for several sports during the Torino Olympics in 2008. The Olympics justified major expenditures on infrastructure and facilities. One benefit was restoration of the facade of the chapel and the Zarbula sundials. The floral frieze was effaced but the sundials restored. The restoration was tastefully done, recovering some hidden features but not replacing obvious features that had been effaced The date 1871, and Zarbula's ZGF were restored as was part of the motto "Memento Mori". The dials face the graveyard so the motto "Remember you must die" is appropriate.

In 1870 the Franco-Prussian war made relations between France and Italy difficult. Zarbula returned to Italy and painted a series of sundials in the Val Chisone region of Piemonte. A total of 12 sundials in this area are attributed to Zarbula, painted in 1870 to 1872. In 1876 Zarbula seems to have returned to France to paint three more sundials near Briançon.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
