It's so close to shore that it's hard to imagine a house having ever been here, but the Potomac River has probably shifted considerably from it's annual flood and low levels. The chimney appears to be made of handmade brick and the kind of stone found in the area. It's my own conjecture but I can imagine that a cabin could have been built here during the canal's construction for a foreman or canal manager at that time.
