Queen Victoria (1819-1901) ruled a quarter of the world (1837-1901), perhaps the best quarter. The British Empire spread art, science, knowledge, law, bureaucracy and red tape to the four corners of the earth. Queen Victoria reigned over and is forever identified with this period of history. One of her many accomplishments was the development of the State of Western Australia and the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia.
Her memory is maintained in Western Australia by an appropriately regal statue in Kings Park, overlooking the City of Perth. The statue is mounted on a tall plinth (~3m). The queen is in regal dress, gazing out over the Swan River, looking towards Perth. The statue is surrounded by canons, which children (and a few adults) play on.
