James Ryder Randall taught English at the Poydras College, located in New Roads. In 1861, he wrote the 9 stanza poem, Maryland, My Maryland. It was first published in New Orleans later that year. It was not until 1939 that the poem, turned song, was adapted as the Maryland State Song.
