The Orthwein Mansion at 15 Portland Place was built circa 1900 for William D. Orthwein. Orthwein born in German, emigrated to the U.S. in 1860. He got involved in the St. Louis grain dealing business, eventually founding the W.D Orthwein Grain Company which he headed. He also had interests in banking and telephone company.
The Neo-Classical styled mansion was designed by the architectural firm of Widdman, Walsh and Boisselier. It is well maintained.
