This hatchery is the only facility in the world dedicated to restoring the population of white sea bass, a species that lives along the Pacific Coast. The hatchery is capable of producing over 350,000 juvenile white sea bass annually.

Since 1995, the Leon Raymond Hubbard Jr. Marine Fish Hatchery in Carlsbad has released 1.4 million white sea bass into the ocean, helping replenish supplies of the once-abundant fish.
The hatchery is part of the Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute headquartered on Mission Bay in San Diego. The nonprofit researches marine animals and their environment.
The hatchery is at the end of Garfield Street on the north shore of Agua Hedionda Lagoon, where a gated driveway leads to the metal building. Inside are five 12,000-gallon tanks, 20 feet across and 6 feet deep, each containing about 25 breeding pairs of fish. The hatchery also has six tanks for young juveniles and seven for older juveniles.
Tours are available on request. There are no walk up visits and nothing to see from the street.
