George and Emma Carr entered the local scene as managers of the Broken Box Ranch. When the ranch sold for town lots in 1891, the Carr's turned to realestate investment. Teir first building on this site, a 2-story frame structure, burned in the 1896 fires. Before the end of the year, the Carr's rebuilt in brick.
They leased their new building to A.W. Morrell. Morrell, originally from Aspen, moved his hardware and mining supply business here and profited for nearly three decades. After Morrells departure, a succession of other hardware businesses prospered here for the next 70 years. The most recent operation, Yarborough Hardware, closed its doors in 1991.
