The monuments consists of a bronze statue on a brick sockle. It depicts a man struggling to rise under pressure, symbolizing the Dutch Resistance during WWII.
The monument is located centrally in the Park Goudestein surrounding the Maarssen town hall, which can be seen in the background on one of the photographs. The park is located at the Diependaalseweg in Maarssen.
Even though the text makes no reference in itself to the war or the resistance, to any Dutchman, it is clear what it stands for. For more information on the Dutch resistance, visit the wikipedia entries in English or in Dutch.
The text on bronze plaque has a Dutch lion as depicted in the national coat of arms and the following text:
In honor of all those who valued justice and freedom above their lives.
