This statue is found on a small promontory, along the beach of the small town of Songkhla, in southern Thailand. The statue is based on a Thai legend and epic saga, which in small part tells of a mermaid, who combed her hair on the beach, but was frightened away by a young fisherman, who in turn waited forever for her return—presumably a beautiful mermaid.
The saga was composed by Phra Sunthorn Vohara aka Sunthorn Phu (1786–1855), distinguished Thai poet and author, and tells of the many adventures of the young prince, Phra Apaimanee. The saga is widely popular in Thailand. A photo in the gallery shows the statue plaque.
The statue is well constructed, and clearly popular with locals and local tourists. I had to wait 10mins for my turn to clamber up to the mermaid and have my photo taken.
ahem... There is a 'local legend' (so I am told) to the effect that, rubbing the mermaid's breasts produces good luck. While I was there I saw several (in fact all of them) local boys rubbing her breasts, for luck.
