Hat Yai ('Hard Yai') is the major city of southern Thailand. It has a small airport, a bus station, and, as you would expect of a city of this significance, a train station. Hat Yai lies on the southern Thai rail route, and is the southern most rail hub. The station has train sheds and railyards. The station is also Thailand's sole international rail link, linking Thailand to Malaysia.

The train station looks just a little old and worn, but it is entirely serviceable. As befits a city of this size the station is somewhat larger than are most outside of Bangkok. Inside the station there are timetables on display in English (not always the case) and an information counter, plus ticket counters, waiting areas, and a branch of the Thai rail police. Outside the station are mini-buses and tuk tuks, ready to whisk you away to anywhere in the city.

The Hat Yai city centre lies to the immediate east of the station. Here you will find hotels, travel agencies, restaurants, bars, and shops.
