At the top of a tall obelisk a Civil War soldier stands holding a musket by the barrel with both hands in front of him, the butt of the musket resting next to his proper right foot. He stands against a tree stump. He has a moustache and wears a hat and a uniform. Equipment is strapped to him, including an ammunition pack, a canteen, and a blanket draped across his proper left shoulder. The sculpture is mounted atop an obelisk with three graduated steps at the bottom. On the right side of the obelisk is a relief of two crossed muskets with butts toward the ground. On the left side of the obelisk is a relief of two crossed banners with banded hems and finial tops that resemble those of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

BY THEIR SUBLIME COURAGE.
AND UNSPEAKABLE SACRIFICE,
EVEN TO THE HEROISM OF DEATH,
HAVE PRESERVED FOR US,
THROUGH THE GLOOM OF DEFEAT,
A PRICELESS HERITAGE OF HONOR.

This sculpture is better than the average monument of this type. The figure is more detailed and more realistic than some I have seen.

This monument was rededicated in June of 2009 and it appears it was cleaned up a little for the occasion.

DIFFERENCES NOTED BETWEEN THE INVENTORY LISTING AND YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH:
The sculpture itself could used some cleaning. The left leg has a large black spot which looks like mold or mildew.
