The Ragland Residence


Residences and businesses develop side-by-side on Hunter Street, whose evolution is reflected in this building’s age, style, and historical use. One of the street’s oldest surviving structure, this house was constructed before 1900 in the Queen Anne style, with ornamental gables and other elements of quality craftsmanship. The African American Ragland family lived here for over six decades, operating a clothes cleaning service and, later, a beauty salon from their home. Other family members worked as teachers, janitors, a seamstress, and a female printer.
