If any name evokes the spirit of the people who fought for Vermont's independence, it is Ethan Allen.
In Burlington's Greenmount Cemetery, an eight-foor statue of Allen stands atop a 42-foot Tuscan pillar on a square base. The Smithsonian's sculpture inventory list this with the alternate title Ticonderoga (referring to Allen's capture of Fort Ticonderoga at the onset of the Revolution).
It behooves us to bear in mind that any image of Allen is artist's concept; with no documented images, it is not known what he actually looked like.
A vault below the monument is believed to be Allen's grave.
