Push Pin
The unveiling of Derek Sullivan’s giant bronze and stainless steel Push Pin in the Art Centre’s Sculpture Park was an occasion of particular significance. At age 28, Sullivan was the youngest artist to be awarded a permanent outdoor sculpture commission in the Sculpture Park’s 20-year history. Push Pin was also the 27th sculpture installation and the 3rd artist’s bench commission since the Art Centre announced a call for submissions in 2000. Push Pin sits at a jaunty angle near the Art Centre’s main walkway as a tempting invitation to passersby.
The Art Centre awarded this commission to Sullivan following his 2001 exhibition WORKSHOPPING. In response to the Art Centre’s call for artist’s bench submissions, Sullivan seized the opportunity of his first solo exhibition in a public art gallery to create an interactive work space in which he generated proposals for artist’s benches. The resulting sculpture Push Pin fits neatly within Sullivan’s practice of modifying consumer projects into decorative and modern works of art.
Sullivan graduated from the Master of Fine Art program at the University of Guelph (2001). Sullivan is an emerging artist who is quickly gaining national and international recognition. He has exhibited extensively in Toronto and Vancouver, and recently in China and Germany. This most recent installation fits neatly within the artist’s practice of modifying consumer projects into decorative and modern works of art.
Push Pin was commissioned with funds from the Gordon and Evelyn Couling Estate and with the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts Acquisition Assistance Program.
