Winthrop Park is a tiny rectangle of treed space in the center of Harvard Square and was the location of stores at this location - though the sculpture in the center of the park was not part of them.

In the center of the Harvard Square section of Cambridge, there is a small rectangle of land with trees that is a nice resting spot among the retail shops and traffic. The spot is called Winthrop Park, and it is located at the intersection of Mt. Auburn Street and J. F. Kennedy Street.

The park has paths criss-crossing it and several benches to sit and relax. On the end post of a fence along J. F. Kennedy Street is a stone marker with the words "Winthrop Park."

In the center of the park is a stone structure that appears to have been part of the Newtowne Market where you might be led to believe that these were once part of a row of stores on or near this location. This is, in fact, a sculpture made in 1986, called "Quiet Cornerstone," by Carlos Dorrien, who went to the Massachusetts College of Art and now lives in Argentina. A blue oval marker does state that this was the site of the Marketplace of Newtowne, and that the park was dedicated in 1834.

There is a Pete's Coffee next to the park if you need something to drink while you are admiring the park!
