The St. Paul's Episcopal parish was founded January 1, 1837. The original members were settlers from North Carolina. The first church building was consecrated in 1838. The funding of present church building was begun in 1854 and construction began in 1856. The construction of the sturdy brick and stone edifice was completed by March 1859. On December 18, 1860, the new building was consecrated by Bishop William Mercer Green.
