All over the world, Potsdam is famous for its Baroque Castles. These castles luckily survived the bombing raids of World War II. Potsdam's City Palace, once located right downtown, was not so lucky. Originally built in 1587, it was once the largest and most famous Renaissance building in the residency of Prussian Kings.
Unfortunately, the castle - together with many other Renaissance buildings in downtown Potsdam was severely damaged during the last days of World War II. Later, in 1959, Communist authorities decided to demolish what was left.
The only building remaining were the Royal Stables, now the oldest building in town and the last evidence of a once thriving Renaissance architecture in this 1,000 year-old town.
