A rectangular stele with a curved top containing an oval, inset, bas-relief bust of Zell Miller. Miller wears a suit and tie. His ear-length hair is parted on the proper right side and combed to the proper left. The stele has faceted edges. It is mounted upon a base with one granite step set upon a concrete foundation.
The stele was installed in honor of then-Lieutenant Governor Zell Miller by the Georgia Department of Transportation in recognition of his support of developmental highways. It rests atop a knoll along the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway (State Highway 76) near Miller's home town of Young Harris, Georgia. Miller was elected Governor of Georgia and served 1991-1999.He also served as US Senator from Georgia 2000-2005. Since 1990, the stele has been a target of vandals who periodically splatter it with food, paint and other substances. The Georgia DOT regularly cleans the monument.
This place is a good place to stop and enjoy the scenery. The monument is in good shape and kind of a surprise to those passing by because it is not usual to see this type of monument along the 4 lane highway.
The likeness of Zell Miller is very good. The sculptor did an excellent job of making the likeness realistic.
