Glad McArthur was a devoted gardener who helped many people in Central Otago. When she passed away a portion of Pioneer Park was set aside as a memorial to her work and this sundial was incorporated.
On the sundial there is an inscription:
Love binds the hours,
Unfolds the flowers of the passing days.
When love is all no shadows fall --
The sunshine stays.
