The present church was built in 1863 by Lady Howard and occupies the site of an earlier building. On an old county map of Westmorland, a chapel is shown here dated 1670. Some of the features of the earlier building have been retained including a beautiful carved oak door which dates from 1662. Inside is an old oak chest dating from 1719 and a silver chalice dated 1577.
The church is built of stone in a plain Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western turret containing one bell. Seating for 120 people. The register of baptisms dates from 1670, marriages 1679 and burials 1712.
A Wainwright (author:1979) states: "Longsleddale's parish church of St Mary is situated on a knoll above the river, midway along the valley. It was a chapel of Kendal until rebuilt in 1712, then being given parochial status. The present church is the result of further rebuilding in 1863. Some fittings have been retained from the older structures, notably a carved oak door dated 1662 and a silver chalice dated 1571".
The modern sign with the name of the church is a piece of slate built into the wall to survive the harsh weather in the valley. The church is locked.
