From the Inventory: "Two football players, in rugby gear of the turn-of-the-century, one standing, one kneeling. The standing figures, who is injured, holds a football pressed to his proper right side, while his left hand rests on the shoulder of the kneeling player who bandages his leg.
The sculpture and its base were funded by San Francisco Mayor James D. Phelan, and cost approximately $9,500. The sculpture was a gift by Phelan to the winner of the first two football games in the rivalry between Stanford and CAL. The inscription on the base was a later addition. Over the years the sculpture has been the subject of vandalism and at one time an iron fence was erected to help protect the statue. The rugby uniforms of the two players also caused some controversy."
