City of Baton Rouge marker.
Marker text states:
Named for the Greenwell family, a resort with a hotel, pavillion and cottages was developed here in the 1850's with stage service to and from Baton Rouge. General John C. Breckinridge's Confederate troops camped here in August 1862. The hotel burned during the Civil War, and a later attempt to revive the resort failed. The state tuberculosis hospital was established here in 1923.
